An accomplished financial advisor in the Chicago area, Maarten de Jeu founded SVM Business Advisory. Aside from his professional accomplishments, Maarten de Jeu engages with his community in the form of various service projects, including the Monday Meals program at Temple Sholom.

A progressive place of worship with programs dedicated to the values of social justice, Temple Sholom’s initiatives include Eco Chavura, which translates as “eco fellowship.” The new program’s primary objective is to reduce Temple Sholom’s environmental impact and raise awareness of environmental justice issues like the threat of climate change that face our world.

Launching an education program about proper recycling procedures, eliminating styrofoam and plastic products in favor of compostable ones, and hosting a farmers' market to encourage the consumption of healthy, locally grown food are among the steps Eco Chavura has taken to achieve this objective. Moreover, Temple Sholom held a screening of the documentary Food Patriots.

A successful financial professional based in Chicago, Maarten de Jeu is the founder and managing partner of SVM Business Advisory. Maarten de Jeu previously co-chaired the Science Spins program at the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI), where the goal was to help educate visitors about the history of the bicycle.

Currently the largest science museum in the Western Hemisphere, the MSI uses its Farrell Fellows internship to engage Chicago-area teens in scientific learning. Held during the summer months, the internship takes place over five weeks and includes coursework in areas such as leadership development, public speaking, and science. At the end of the program, students have the opportunity to present interactive science activities in their communities and at the museum itself.

In 2014, 40 teens joined forces to stage America’s Got Bubbles, a show that educated viewers about the chemistry of bubbles. During their visits to 17 public library branches throughout Chicago, participants in the Farrell Fellows program taught young children to engineer carnival tents from newspaper and launch model rockets on a high striker game.

For more than 10 years, Maarten de Jeu has worked in the management and consulting industry in a number of high-level positions. Since 2013, he has drawn on that experience as the founder and managing partner of SVM Business Advisory. Additionally, Maarten de Jeu served as a cochair of Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry’s Science Spins program.

The largest science museum in the western hemisphere, the Museum of Science and Industry features more than 35,000 artifacts across more than 400,000 square feet. Founded in 1933, the museum also includes a Center for the Advancement of Science Education. Through the center, the museum helps develop science teacher education courses and offers after-school science clubs, learning labs, and youth development programs.

A forerunner to the museum’s current Art of the Bicycle exhibit, Science Spins featured two bike rides that ended at the museum and the first look at its extensive bike collection, in addition to other activities. The museum’s collection team was available to explain the exhibits, including early bikes such as the first two-wheel bicycle, the 1818 Draisienne, and the first bike with a modern design, the 1900 No. 10 Giant. Other features of Science Spins ranged from bicycle-powered objects such as a record player and a fountain to a demonstration of bicycle restoration. Today, the Art of the Bicycle examines the history of bicycles while exploring the technology that will drive the manufacture and design of bikes of the future.
